The Museum of Fishing

40 years of The Museum of Fishing

On the occasion of its 40 years, the Museum of the fishing of Concarneau presents its history and the wealth of its patrimony, through a temporary exhibition which will be held from May.

In 1961 was created in Brittany the first French museum completely dedicated to the fishing. This project was born at instigation of some personalities keen on maritime history, reunited in the Association of the Friends of the Museum of Fishing, which manages even today the structure.

Within the Closed City, Concarneau's historic heart, the Museum of Fishing became in the course of the years a historic and technical centre of presentation of the fisheries of the whole world. Its collections constituted thanks to the donations of numerous lovers of the sea, to the loans of the other museums and to the meticulous work of the model makers of the Museum.

In 1987, the Museum of Fishing becomes the first museum with French stream by integrating into its circuit of visit a deep-sea trawler of 34,80 metres, "Hemerica". This boat is one of the last representatives of trawlers with lateral fishing, the use of which was abandoned in the 1980's.

To celebrate the birthday of its creation, the Museum turns around over 40 years of collection, presentations and actions in favour of the conservation of the maritime patrimony. The exhibition dedicated to this event will come to finish a visit where shell stakes in light of the wealth and unusual objects of collections.

The guest can also discover new rooms: a room of aquariums where evolve fishes of the Brittany's coasts, video room presenting in pictures the various peaches practised in the region, an engine room dedicated to the presentation of the maritime engines, as well as a cockpit of trawler with real size. The spring also sees the return of Hemerica in the quay of the Museum, after winter spent in renovation at Piriou's in Concarneau.
