The Museum of Fishing

The Museum of Fishing

Founded in 1961, it is situated in the entrance(entry) of the Vauban Street in the heart of the Closed City, in the ancient place of a chapel (ND of the Gate) and barracks.

You will need one hour minimum to do the tour but two hours will be necessary for you for an complete visit of 1 500 m3 of exhibitions, aquariums and vessels with stream (Hémérica, Racleur de l'ocean).

With more annual 65 000 guests, the Museum of the Peach(fishing) takes place in the first rank of the museums of Brittany. One presents it, describes and explains the usage and the functioning of machines and fishing tackles of all the seas of the globe. Models, but also about fifteen boats, allow to the guests to understand indeed all the variety of the techniques of fishing.

If I give you a fish
I give you to eat for one day
If I learn you to go fishing
I give you to eat for ever.

It is by this Chinese proverb that the guest is welcomed to the Museum of Fishing in Concarneau. And one can find all the information about techniques so contemporary as ancestral of the fishing in the world there.

The evolution of techniques takes place during four shop windows illustrating the prehistory, the antiquity, the middle-age and the contemporary time.

The shipbuilding, the sail-loft, the canning factory, the navigation and the motorization find their place in the one or other one of the galleries which surround the central yard.

Numerous models to the 1/33-rd illustrate this course dedicated to the fishing. One will notice particularly a trawler going raising its trawl net by the back, a sight of a trawler dragging its train of fishing, cod-fishermen...

One will appreciate as well the models of the blue city there. One can discover so Concarneau's aspect in the middle of the century and a forecast of its future in a few years.

Maritime aquariums, explanatory panels, on 1500 m² of exhibitions complete this flying over an activity confidentially connected to the blue city.

The bravest can again visit vessels with streams: the trawler Hémerica and the tuna boat Racleur of ocean, more small Goulphar, coastal trawler.

Still let us note that Hémerica is going to buy itself a small rejuvenation treatment on the slipway: reorganizations for the visits and the restoration of the vessel. Two in three working months.

Aquariums are also going to have the right to their renovation. The room is going to be completely redone. First works this summer on the roof. All should be ended for Easter 2001.
